If you’ve not heard of Briarfield Farm Sanctuary, put them on your radar. They are doing fantastic work just outside the little hamlet of Matawan MI.

In June they rescued Max and Marley, two beautiful Labrador Retrievers, from death row at the Kalamazoo County Animal Shelter.

Wishbone and the staff at the Allegan Animal Shelter attempted to help place these boys through a rescue in Indiana. When that fell through, the staff at Briarfield Sanctuary gave them temporary quarters and are working hard to find them permanent homes.

Marley

If you love Labs, you’ll want to meet these boys. Contact Danielle at briarfieldfarm@gmail.com. Or visit their Facebook Page.

Marley is a 4 year old yellow lab. He’s a large boy weighing about 90 lbs. He’s very sweet and loving with a moderate energy level. Marley enjoys activities such as playing with his doggy friends, going on walks and swimming. He does not care to much for being confined to a certain area and has jumped the fence

Max

on occasion. Marley will need a home where he can safely play without escaping. He’s up to date on all vaccinations, has been neutered, micro chipped, and he is current on flea and heart worm medications.

Max is a 3 year old black lab. Like Marley, he too is very sweet and gets along with most other dogs. Max enjoys playing fetch, going on walks, and playing with his friends. He is a little over weight so will be looking for an active family to get him back into shape. Max is up to date on all vaccinations, neutered, micro chipped, and current on flea and heart worm medications.

Prayers were answered this past weekend at the Allegan Animal Shelter. We closed the doors Friday evening dejected and feeling helpless. All week cats and dogs rained on our little shelter, many were strays picked up by animal control, but many were owner surrenders too. We were over capacity. Dogs sitting in crates in the garage, and kittens filled condos in the lobby.

We asked for your prayers and help from other shelters. Those prayers were answered and calls for help fulfilled by our friends across the state. Eight dogs and dozens of cats and kittens were transported to other shelters and rescue groups opening a small hole in our shelter. We are still over capacity on cats ( as I’m sure most are ) but it is manageable, and we opened enough kennels to get our dogs out of crates and on comfortable beds.

I wish each of you could stand in our shoes for just one day to understand life at a county animal shelter. We try so hard to be positive, bright and chearful for the public. But the honest true is every car that arrives we scan for dogs, or crates of kittens, and do a mental calculus of how much closer they bring us to full capacity. We live and die emotionally by that count… each and every day.

This week cats and dogs rained on our little shelter. In the blink of an eye are empty kennels were filled and we closed our doors this evening with an over capacity shelter, 38 dogs and 119 cats. The last black lab and a dutch shepherd delivered by animal control broke our back. For the first time in 8 months we have to consider taking lives for no reason other than space restrictions. How incredibly unfair it is for these little souls.

So pray for us this weekend and hope for a miracle. If you have dogs or cats you can no longer care for, call us first for alternatives before you bring them in this week.

If you have room in your hearts and homes to foster a cat or dog to help us through this crisis, please e-mail us at help.alleganshelter@gmail.com.

Meet Patsy & Max. Like many cats and dogs that come into the Allegan Shelter, their previous owners were forced to move from their home and could not take their pets with them.

Patsy and Max are 7 years old and have been together since they were puppies. Their family loved them dearly, took great care of them, and taught them well. They placed them in our hands and left in tears begging us that we place them together. They did not believe Patsy and Max would thrive without each other.

Max is a great dog. He knows many commands, sit, stay, lie down, no, and also has a few tricks up his paw. He will hold a treat on his nose until you snap your fingers, stay across the room from steak on a plate until you snap your fingers. He absolutely loves to play any kind of catch and will put the ball or rock right on top of your foot if you tell him you can’t reach it. Once he knows he’s gonna be loved and played with he is the most loyal dog you could home for and will stay on property without a leash.

Patsy is a lover and will not leave your side and loves to chase sticks. Her previous owner tells us a soft gentle voice is needed. Coming from an abusive home as a puppy, angry voices frighten her and she needs the assurance of Max.

They are both absolute loves. If you have room in your home and room in your heart for a wonderful older couple please contact the Allegan Animal Shelter ( 269-686-5112 ). Or you can go to this link <adoption> to fill out an adoption application.

SPECIAL NOTE: Patsy and Max will not do well in our shelter long term. We are searching for a foster family to care for them while we find a permanent home. If you have the love to share and ability to care for them for 4-8 weeks while we find the perfect home, please contact Karen at adoptions.alleganshelter@gmail.com.

We made history this month by performing the first ever spay-neuter surgeries at the Allegan County Animal Shelter.

Dr. Applegate and Josh Mohler prep a cat for suregery.

Over the past year we have accumulated equipment for our surgery room through generous donations from the Humane Society of Huron Valley, and a $10,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture Companion Animal Welfare Fund. The final piece of the puzzle was put in place with an working agreement with Dr. Lisa Applegate of Lawton MI. Each Monday Dr. Applegate performs clinical rounds of our resident animals then performs spay or neuter surgeries.

The first “shake down” surgeries were completed Monday, June 4 when two male cats were neutered and two female cats were spayed. That was stepped up on Monday June 11 when three female cats were spayed and seven male cats neutered. Beginning

Dr. Applegate prepares to spay our first cat.

Monday June 18, we will begin spay-neuter for dogs.

Our goal is spay and neuter all adoptable cats and dogs prior to leaving the shelter. Historically adopters were required to sign a Spay-Neuter Contract and prepay for the procedure with a veterinarian of their choice. It was a cumbersome process and hindered adoptions, it was also difficult and time consuming to confirm the surgery was actually performed. Prepaying a $130 neuter surgery was small potatoes to someone intent on breeding their dog for a profit. By altering the cat or dog prior to leaving the shelter, we are ensuring that pet will never reproduce and add to the county’s over population problem.

The service provides tremendous value to the adopter. We expect the new adoption fees will be $130 for dogs and $95 for cats. That includes all vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment, rabies vaccination, a microchip, license, and spay or neuter. The value of those services if done separately would be well in excess of $200.

Step by step we’re making a difference at the Allegan County Animal Shelter.
